Avery & Drew's Rainy Backyard Wedding:

Proof That Great Weddings Aren't About Perfect Weather

There are weddings where everything goes exactly according to plan.

And then there are weddings like Avery and Drew's.

The kind that remind you what weddings are actually about.

A few days before their wedding, the forecast started doing what every outdoor wedding forecast loves to do. The percentages kept creeping up. The radar wasn't looking great. Everyone was watching the weather.

By wedding day, the rain had arrived.

But here's the funny thing.

When I think back on Avery and Drew's wedding, I don't really think about the rain.

I think about the laughter under the tent.

I think about guests gathered around tables sharing incredible food.

I think about a couple who never lost sight of why everyone was there in the first place.

And honestly, I think that's why the day was so special.

A Backyard Wedding That Felt Like Home

One of the things we love most about backyard weddings is that they immediately feel personal.

Guests aren't arriving at a venue they've never seen before.

They're arriving somewhere meaningful.

Somewhere that tells part of the couple's story.

Avery and Drew created a celebration that felt relaxed, welcoming, and completely authentic to them. The tent transformed the property into a beautiful gathering space while still allowing guests to feel connected to the landscape around them.

When the rain came, it didn't take away from that feeling.

If anything, it made it feel even more intimate.

The sound of rain on the tent. Guests settling in together. Everyone leaning into the experience instead of fighting it.

Sometimes the unexpected moments become the most memorable ones.

Food That Reflected the Season

One of the things that made this wedding so special for our team was the menu.

At Crafted, we talk a lot about local sourcing, but this is what it actually looks like.

Not just a phrase on a website.

Real farms. Real growers. Real ingredients from people we know and trust.

Guests started with a vibrant salad featuring local lettuces from Common Hands Farm and Taliaferro Farms, alongside radishes from Sun Sprout Farm, carrots from Titusville Farm, and fennel from Heermance Farm.

The pasta course brought together rigatoni from Sfoglini with mushrooms from Bulich Mushroom Company and nettles from Paffenroth Gardens.

And then there was the trout.

Sourced from Hudson Valley Fisheries and paired with potatoes from Samascott Orchards, green garlic from Sun Sprout Farm, and asparagus from Ray Tousey, it was the kind of dish that felt completely connected to the season and the setting.

This is one of the things we love most about catering during the growing season in New York.

The ingredients do so much of the work for you.

They're fresh. They're local. And they tell the story of where we are.

Why We Love Wood-Fired Cooking

There is something about wood-fired food that just feels right at a backyard wedding.

Guests can see it happening.

They can smell it.

They become part of the experience.

Food stops being something that simply appears on a plate and becomes part of the atmosphere itself.

One of my favorite moments from the entire evening happened after dinner.

The cooking was finished, the rain had settled into the background, and guests naturally started gathering around the wood-fired ovens and fire.

Nobody was rushing off to the next thing.

People lingered. They talked. They laughed. They grabbed another drink and stayed a little longer.

It felt less like a wedding schedule and more like exactly what Avery and Drew had hoped to create, a group of their favorite people spending time together.

As planners and caterers, those are the moments we love most.

Not because they were planned.

But because they happened naturally.

When guests feel comfortable, well-fed, and genuinely happy to be there, the evening takes on a life of its own.

Standing there watching everyone gathered around the fire, you could feel it.

The Vendor Team That Made It Happen

Rainy wedding days don't work without great people.

When plans shift, everyone has to communicate, adapt, and stay focused on the guest experience.

We were fortunate to be part of an incredible vendor team that did exactly that.

Planning & Coordination: Curora Weddings

Photography: Beth Cleveland Photography

DJ & Entertainment: New York Wedding DJs

Hair & Makeup: Bex Salon

Tent & Event Rentals: Big Top Tent Rentals

Additional Rentals: Total Events

Transportation: Royale Transportation

Balloon Installation: Array by Shea

Cake: Cake by Alissa

Every single person played a role in making sure the day felt effortless for Avery and Drew and their guests.

The best weddings are never created by one vendor.

They're created by a team working together toward the same goal.

What Couples Can Learn From This Wedding

If you're planning a backyard wedding, tent wedding, or outdoor celebration, here's what Avery and Drew's wedding reminded us:

Have a weather plan.

Invest in the right tent.

Work with experienced professionals.

And most importantly, don't let the forecast determine how you feel about your wedding day.

Because at the end of the day, guests won't remember whether it rained.

They'll remember how they felt.

They'll remember the conversations.

The food.

The laughter.

The people around them.

Looking back, it's hard to imagine Avery and Drew's wedding any other way.

The rain became part of the story.

The food brought people together.

And what could have felt stressful became something unexpectedly beautiful.

That's what great hospitality does.

It adapts.

It supports.

And it allows everyone to focus on what matters most.
